Below is a link to a short video from the Broward County Sheriff's Dept. about theft of articles out of your car, with a focus on times when filling up at the gas station. It is less than 3 minutes and worth the time to watch.

- The next time you order checks have only your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them. If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know how you sign your checks.
- Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED."
- When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.
- If you have a P.O. Box, use that instead of your home address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it.
- Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a name, address, Social Security number or credit cards.
Here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:
- We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them
- File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation.
- But here's what is perhaps most important of all:
Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.
Here are the numbers you always need to contact if your credit card(s) etc., has been stolen:
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3 742
Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271
Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday.

If you are stopped by any police officer, please follow these simple requests:
-
Stay in your vehicle and wait for the officer to approach you. Exiting your vehicle doesn’t make the officer’s job easier; it makes it more dangerous. The officer must make sure both of you are out of traffic and safe.
-
When stopped, have your drivers license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance available for the officer.
- Don’t argue with the officer on the street. If you disagree with the summons or the officer’s demeanor, contact the police chief or appear in court to voice your objections. An attorney is always recommended.

The police department receives inquires concerning the different types of alarms available and the alarm companies in the area. The police department does not endorse any alarm company, we do, however, encourage the use of home security systems. Security systems vary in price according to type of coverage and the sophistication of the system. If you have any questions about alarm or security systems in general, call the police department at 741-8111.

We are in the middle of tornado season again. Just a reminder, upon verification
of a funnel cloud aloft or a tornado on the ground within twenty-five miles of Weatherby
Lake or upon the issuance of a tornado warning by the National Weather Service,
the City of Weatherby Lake will sound the emergency weather warning siren system.
Police officers will also drive through the city with red lights on and sounding
the siren in the "yelp" mode. Upon hearing this warning, all residents are
advised to take cover, stay tuned to your local radio and television stations for
the all clear. A battery-operated tone-activated weather radio and television
stations for the all clear. A battery-operated, tone-activivated, weather
radio is the best warning device to have in your home.
